  • Reduces stress. Enhances sleep quality, improves energy, decreases anxiety, and promotes calmness and wellbeing.
  • Increases immunity and overall health.  Stimulates blood and lymph circulation, pumping oxygen and nutrients into tissues and organs.
  • Enhances your yoga practice. Increases range of motion and flexibility, stretching muscles, and mobilizing joints.

What is bodywork?

Bodywork encompasses different modalities of therapeutic touch; at Barefoot Movement we offer sessions in shiatsu-style massage, Thai massage, cupping, Tok Sen (a Thai practice that involves the use of a special wooden hammer and wedge to relax muscles in a rhythmically tapping motion), & acupuncture.  These techniques all lend themselves to healing injuries, improving general functioning, and harmonizing body systems.

What should I expect during a session?

Bodywork sessions at Barefoot Movement take place on a padded mat on the floor, and involve movement, stretching, and application of direct pressure. In a session you will be taken through yoga-like movements with the assistance of your therapist. Rocking, rhythmic pressure is applied to the muscles, and often the therapist uses their thumbs, hands, forearms, elbows, knees, and feet. It is a much more dynamic form of massage, and often will include techniques with you lying on your back, stomach, and sides as well as in sitting positions. Through stretching and direct pressure, the therapist helps to promote circulation and openness in the body, using assisted yoga poses to release restrictions in your joints and compression to release muscular tension.

Please note that multiple sessions may take place in the room simultaneously.

Tips for a successful session:

  • Have an essentially empty stomach.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing (think: pajamas or long sleeved/long legged exercise clothes). You may wear socks if you like; the practitioner is the one with the bare feet.  🙂

  • The practitioner will ask you whether you have had any surgeries, broken bones, about any your family health history or, for women, whether there’s any chance that you might be pregnant; your answers will inform the work.
  • If you would like to tip your practitioner, please bring cash or check for them (Joel does not accept tips).
