Hanna Malm
Hanna has been practicing Vinyasa yoga since 2000 and instructing since 2010. The birth of her first child was the life changing event that brought her deeper into yoga. After the birth of her second child, she invested in herself and took the Barefoot Movement Yoga Teacher Training with Leah Gillman who has greatly influenced her teaching style. The experience of the teacher training made her realize she had just scratched the surface of a lifelong journey with yoga. Teaching yoga allows her to share her experience with the practice: one that connects all aspects of self – body, mind, and breath – and by connecting to oneself on a deeper level we also connect to the world around us in a more true way. Her teaching style is encouraging, supportive, and honest, creating a space, a safe and grounded environment in which to grow and learn where you can get to know your body and expand its capabilities. Hanna has enjoys continuing education with Jason Crandell as well as with Jane Austen. Ultimately, Hanna’s students inspire her and teach her new things every day.

For centuries, wise people, mothers, grandmothers and midwives of Latin America have been using the rebozo in birth as a tool to increase strength, comfort and relaxation for pregnant, laboring, birthing people and new parents. The use of the rebozo for supporting pregnancy and birth is based on the ancient knowledge and observation that when a body feels relaxed, supported and safe, the natural processes of birth and the intuitive knowledge of how to move with it easily falls into place.
In this workshop both pregnant and supporting partners will learn more than rebozo techniques, they will see how the rebozo can help them truly connect by using the rebozo as a grounded, smart and loving extension of their arms and care.
-
Alleviate stress and common discomforts in pregnancy
-
Improve a better alignment and muscle relaxation for babies optimal positioning
-
Increase partners’ knowledge and confidence in their labor support roles

-
Learn how to wear and carry your baby on your rebozo for a healthy growth and better sleep

Itzel Rosales
Itzel is a radical birth worker who began serving families in 2014 in Montreal and in the Bay Area since 2015. She is a Certified Doula through Montreal Birth Companions (MBC) doula school, and an abortion doula with the Bay Area Doula Project (BADP). She draws upon the wisdom of her ancestry by employing traditional Mexican Rebozo techniques to empower partners to become confident support people.
As part of her goal of empowering folks going through their reproductive experiences, Itzel is invested in providing support to single parents, families of color, Spanish-speaking people, LGBT*Q, low income families, and allies. She does this through the doula program at Birthways, as a member of the Roots of Labor Doula Collective, as an abortion doula and community organizer for BADP, and as a mentor for young doulas for HATCH.
As a Spanish, English, and French speaker, and having lived in multicultural settings, Itzel has developed an open curiosity for all there is to learn within the diversity of human experiences. The birth of her two girls unveiled a thirst to know more about our body as a source of wisdom, strength, and compassion. As committed spouse and late-blooming queer, she is discovering that human sexuality is a mysterious and open creative force. As a form of life, she’s seeking the truth in her being.

Leonora Willis
Leonora Willis dabbled in Yoga during her late teens, and then again during her pregnancy with her daughter Moana. Two years after Moana’s birth and after a move to Oakland from Los Angeles, Leonora began a serious Yoga practice, under the instruction of Leah Gillman at the Downtown Oakland YMCA. Her love of and dedication to her Yoga practice, fueled by the encouragement of her teacher, led her to her journey as a yoga teacher. Over the course of 10 years of teaching, Leonora has honed her ability to read bodies and recognize students’ individual asana needs while knowledgeably meeting students where they are with helpful guiding verbal directions, hands-on adjustments and keen Vinyasa sequences. In the true Vinyasa flow style, Leonora teaches classes in which students are taught to link the body’s movements to the breath, ultimately linking body, mind and spirit for a calmer, more centered self. To further her journey along the Yogic path, Leonora has recently purchased shares in Barefoot Movement, along with Kara Contrary and Alek Trail and is now proud co-owner of this beloved studio, Barefoot Movement.

Much of modern-day yoga is structured around the sun salutation. In this workshop series, we will learn about the roots of this practice and about how yoga philosophy ties in to get a deeper understanding of this aspect of our asana practice. Each week, we will examine a different variation of the sun salutation and break down the components of key poses and transitions that may not get as much attention in a public class. You will gain insight into your body’s movement patterns and how to move through your sun salutations with precision.

Natalie Russell

Natalie has been practicing various styles of yoga since 2001 and instructing since 2012. Though initially drawn to the physical aspects of the practice, she continues to return to her mat for yoga’s many intrinsic lessons in self-awareness, honesty, vulnerability, and dedication. Her formal training began at Barefoot Movement with Leah Gilman and Mary Beth Ray, and she has continued her training at Yoga Tree and Love Story Yoga in San Francisco. Natalie’s practice and teaching are influenced by her experience as a student of Jason Crandell, Garrick Peters, Leah Gilman, and Mary Beth Ray. Focusing primarily on children ages three to eleven, this ten-hour course will give you all the tools you need to create your own yoga program for children (and Yoga Alliance CEUs, too!). Through the use of themes, games, music, books, and other props, we will transform traditional practice into a creative, stimulating, and—most importantly—FUN yoga experience for kids.
We will delve deep into the world of interactive asana and movement, and cover yoga fundamentals such as philosophy, breathing, and relaxation. You will experience a one-hour mini yogis class, and learn how to design empowering kid-specific practices that encourage children to be strong, self-confident, and healthy in mind, body, and spirit.
This training is designed for people who already practice yoga and are familiar with the various asanas. You don’t have to be a teacher or an expert, but please make sure that you have taken at least 10 classes in the past six months before enrolling in teacher training. Though seemingly illusive, pranic (upward, invigorating energy) and apanic (downward, calming energy) actions help to bring clarity and direction to the energetic pathways in the body. In this workshop, we will explore not only how to find these two contradictory, yet complementary actions of rooting and uplifting in different postures, but also to use these actions to find more depth in one’s yoga practice. Through finding these subtle yet very attainable sensations, students will learn how to feel the direction of energy lines of the body and bring a new sense of curiosity and playfulness to their asana practice.

Alek Trail

Alek came to yoga in her late teens, and since then has been exploring and experimenting with the physical and mental practice as a way to stay curious, humbled, and connected. With a background in modern dance and improvisational movement, yoga has provided her different perspectives to approach and refine the body and mind in subtler ways.
With her teaching philosophy rooted in authenticity, kinesthetic awareness, and inquiry, her classes give her students a deeper sense of their inner landscape into which they can dive deeper intellectually, spiritually, and physically. She creates an experience for her students that allows them to hone awareness, drop in, and gain more mindful insight into their own unique personal practice. Alek received her 500-hr certification with Leah Gillman in 2014. Though she is now based in Austin, TX, she is currently a co-owner of Barefoot Movement and travels back frequently (keep your eyes peeled for her on the schedule!). She continues her personal studies in Shadow (Hatha) Yoga with Mark Horner in Berkeley, CA.
