These classes are open to experienced massage therapists and novices alike. Because learning to massage with one’s feet is generally unfamiliar for everyone, these classes provide the opportunity and support needed to ‘get the hang of it’. The first layer of the learning process is becoming familiar with the gross form as well as the balance and the coordination required. The second layer is developing the ability to feel through the feet. In this class, Leah will guide half of the students through a massage ‘routine’ using primarily the feet while the other half of the class receives. Then, students exchange places so that each class consists of both giving and receiving a session. Since practice, practice, practice is the key, one could regard this class in the same way they would regard a yoga class. Come regularly to get the hang of it. This class works beautifully in conjunction with the Ashiatsu massage workshops offered on an occasional basis. Barefoot Bodywork classes are offered on a drop-in basis and are included with Unlimited Classes purchases and priced as 2 drop-in classes, because each class is 2.5 hours.

Ashiatsu is a bodywork form that applies therapeutic pressure (through clothing) to promote health and well being. Although “Ashiatsu” literally means foot (ashi) pressure (atsu) in Japanese, ashiatsu techniques also make use of knees, elbows, palms, and fingers where necessary and appropriate.

By working with the body, Ashiatsu can heighten total (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual) awareness. Treatments typically include stretching, stimulation or sedation of acupressure points/meridians, and structural alignment techniques. The work is effective therapeutically and clients will often feel the work deeply in their muscles, internal organs, and bones.

Edward Spencermajored in psychology and has graduate credits in clinical psychology. He has been a practitioner of Ashiatsu for 29 years and an instructor in the Bay Area for 25 years. Past major influences on his work include Master Y.C. Chiang for Tai Chi, Loren Berry for structural work, and the Lomi School for body-oriented psychology. Recent influences include 10 years in personal therapy, 15 years of psychic work with Phyllis Pay, and 10 years facilitating men’s groups through the Center for Intuitive Energy Processing.

This workshop work well in conjunction with the Thursday 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. Barefoot Bodywork classes that run from September 5 - December 12, 2013. See the Classes page for more information
