Thai massage is a system of massage and manipulation developed in Thailand, and influenced by the traditional medicine systems of India, China, and Southeast Asia, as well as by yoga.

The massage recipient wears loose, comfortable clothes and lies on a mat. The receiver may be positioned in a variety of yoga-like positions during the course of the massage, the practitioner leans on the recipient’s body using hands and usually straight arms to apply firm rhythmic pressure. The massage generally follows designated lines (Sen) in the body. Legs and feet of the giver can be used to fixate the body or limbs of the recipient. In other positions, hands fixate the body, while the feet do the massaging action. Sessions include stretching of the entire body, manipulating the recipients body into many yoga-like positions. There is a standard procedure and rhythm to the massage, which the practitioner will adjust to fit each individual client.

In this particular Thai Massage training, techniques that make up a complete session will be taught. Along the way, suggestions for how to modify the session for a prenatal client will be given.

Barefoot Bodywork Class with Leah Gillman

This class is currently not in session.

Look for a Barefoot Bodywork weekend workshop coming soon!

These classes are open to experienced massage therapists and novices alike. Because learning to massage with one’s feet is generally unfamiliar for everyone, these classes provide the opportunity and support needed to ‘get the hang of it’. The first layer of the learning process is becoming familiar with the gross form as well as the balance and the coordination required. The second layer is developing the ability to feel through the feet. In this class, Leah will guide half of the students through a massage ‘routine’ using primarily the feet while the other half of the class receives. Then, students exchange places so that each class consists of both giving and receiving a session. Since practice, practice, practice is the key, one could regard this class in the same way they would regard a yoga class. Come regularly to get the hang of it. This class works beautifully in conjunction with the Ashiatsu massage workshops offered on an occasional basis. Barefoot Bodywork classes are offered on a drop-in basis and are included with Unlimited Classes purchases and priced as 2 drop-in classes, because each class is 2.5 hours.
