FAQs, FYTT I
What if I need to miss an FYTT I class meeting?
Our make-up policy is spelled out on the FYTT I Student Handbook page
I’m not really interested in becoming a yoga teacher, is the FYTT I program still going to benefit me?
Approximately ⅓ of our FYTT I students don’t envision themselves teaching yoga in the future, when they embark in the program. Often they become interested in teaching during or after the program, sometimes they don’t.
Often applicants and potential applicants are looking for a structure to help them adhere to their personal goal of strengthening their personal yoga practice, whether or not teaching yoga is on their agenda. The program works very well in that regard.
The common goal, for all of the students who participate, is to get to ‘that’ level of understanding in their own practice that would enable them to teach from a knowing place, whether or not they plan on teaching or not. And the teaching skills that participants acquire tend to double as useful ‘life skills’.
All that said, the FYTT I program prioritizes readying the participants for teaching. All FYTT I students will be asked to participate as if they are preparing to teach.
What are the prospects for teaching yoga after graduation from FYTT I?
Career possibilities are varied. ‘don’t quit your day job’ cues people in on the challenges associated with that. There is a high level of competition for yoga teaching positions and the pay has gone down over the years. There are many yoga teachers in the Bay Area with loads of experience so getting started as a new teacher can be tough. And, there are new teaching opportunities appearing all the time. For those who are self-starters and look for creative ways to reach out into the community to offer their teaching, the sky’s the limit! ![]()
Barefoot Movement often hires approximately 1/3 to 1/2 or more of the FYTT I graduates from a given class, depending on class availability, and the many different factors that determine if a graduate is a good fit for Barefoot Movement.
Are there scholarships available?
There is one work-trade student per TT session that covers $1000 of the tuition. It’s a lot of work but also gives you deeper experience because you are that much more immersed in the inner workings of the program. If you’re interested, send a resume with your request to be considered for the position. http://www.barefootmovement.com/yoga-teacher-training/fytt-i/ There are usually a few applicants for the work-trade position, we look for folks who have great organizational skills in place.
How do I know if my practice is advanced enough for FYTT I to be a good fit for me?
The best way to know is to come take a class with one of the FYTT I instructors. They will be able to see if you are far enough along with your practice, or if your approach to practice, has you in good position to benefit from the program. Chances are good that if you’re finding yourself considering and desiring the program, that you’re ready.
How much do the classes at Barefoot Movement cost while I’m participating in the FYTT I program?
A reduced rate comes into effect once you make your payment-in-full or your initial deposit if you are making installments. The 30 Days of Unlimited Classes rate remains as it is, there is no discount for that plan. However, the drop-in rate for FYTT I students (and graduates!) is half the regular rate, also half the cost for 10 class packs. So, you can do the math, it depends on how many classes per month you plan to take at Barefoot and take advantage of whatever ends up being the best deal for you. We often have openings for work-trade students: Unlimited Classes in exchange for 2 hours per week of work.
